There are questions related specifically to medical conditions that could possibly affect your diving, and a physical exam may be required if your medical statement includes limitations. Strong swimming skills are not vital, but comfort and the ability to swim reasonably in deep water are. Your SSI Dive Professional will conduct a water skills evaluation to make sure you can have a confident and comfortable diving experience. Reasonable water skills and conditioning, along with the mastery of your Total Diving System that you will attain during your course, are the keys to a future of enjoyable diving.

Certified SSI Open Water Divers can dive with an equally or more qualified buddy in environments equivalent to their training and to a maximum depth of 18m. Students younger than 15 years old will be certified as an SSI Junior Open Water Diver and must dive under the direct supervision of a dive professional or with a certified adult in environments equivalent to their training.
